Suicide Prevention Training Request

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students in the United States. The University of Maryland is committed to providing information and training to prevent suicide. We offer a FREE Suicide Prevention training for University of Maryland, College Park students, staff, and faculty. Due to limited resources, we are unable to offer trainings to the community at-large.

Gatekeeper Training

A Gatekeeper is anyone in a position who could be approached in a suicidal crisis but who typically is not trained to intervene in such situations. Gatekeeper trainings are for those who want to feel more comfortable, confident and competent in helping to prevent the risk of suicide.

This training teaches people how to:

  • recognize individuals who are at potential suicide risk
  • intervene
  • refer others to professional counseling

Gatekeepers are given information that is easy to understand, along with methods to encourage a person to get help and suicide prevention resources. Presentations are typically 1 hour, but time can be adjusted based on the needs of your group. Trainings are often scheduled by individuals from student groups, residence halls, and other UMD-affiliated organizations. Instructors also sometimes request presentations that correspond with students' academic coursework.

Groups are required to provide presentation space (example: reserved classroom), computer, projector, and screen. We typically play a short DVD as part of the training, so rooms with audio-visual capabilities are preferred.
