About Nutrition Services

The Nutrition Services unit of the Health Promotion Department at the University Health Center serves all students, faculty, and staff associated with the campus community. Services include disease prevention and wellness instruction as well as medical nutritional therapy for chronic medical problems such as diabetes, obesity, eating disorders, and irritable bowel syndrome. Private initial and follow-up appointments are available at the University Health Center. To make an appointment call (301) 314-8184. There is a fee for each appointment. Students are charged $15.00 per visit as a co-payment. All non-students are charged $50.00 per visit.

Other services include off-site workshops on a variety of healthy eating topics for campus groups. Additionally, an eight seminar series on weight management is offered each semester. back to top

Description of Services

Individual Nutrition counseling

A One-on-One session which will assess one's nutritional status and help implement change to improve health through healthier eating. (Appointments are required and made by calling 301-314-8184; Fee is $15 for students and all non-students are charged $50.00 visit.) Non-students will be seen for nutrition counseling between semesters only. Open times for non-students are December 15 - January 25 and May 15 - August 15.

Nutrition Seminars

Nutrition seminars on a variety of topics are given regularly at the CHWB. Topics may include Sports Supplements, Sports Nutrition, and Healthy Holiday Eating. Times and dates can be obtained from the CHWB. (Free!)

Weight Management class

Investigate this non-diet approach to managing your weight for a lifetime. This course will combine nutrition education based on the philosophy of intuitive eating and a variety of exercise. Participants will learn what to include in a daily diet, how to overcome emotional eating, how to create a personal exercise program and much more.

In each session, participants will have time to share what is working and not working for them while getting advice from Registered Dietitian Jane Jakubczak and Health Educator Tracy Zeeger. Lectures and discussions will be followed by a variety of exercise classes for those not currently engaging in a regular exercise program.

Diet Analysis

One keeps a 2 day food record and meets at the CHWB with a trained dietetic student to have the diet put through a Diet Analysis Program. Recommendations are made from the results of the reports. (Free, pre-appointment made at CHWB, 301-314-1493.)

“Drop in Hours”

Call (301) 314-1493 to find out days and times you can stop by the Center for Health and Wellbeing to ask the nutritionist questions. (Free, no appointment needed.)

Outreach Programs
