Mental Health

Psychiatrists: Medical Doctors who specialize in the treatment of behavioral disorders. At the Mental Health Service, Psychiatrists conduct evaluations, prescribe and monitor medications when indicated and respond to mental health emergencies. Additionally, Psychiatrists facilitate groups and educate about mental health issues.
Psychotherapists: Licensed Clinical Social Workers who are trained to provide various modalities of therapy. At the Mental Health Service, psychotherapists offer individual and group therapy to undergraduate and graduate students. Psychotherapists provide crisis intervention, training about mental health issues and supervision of Master’s and Doctoral level interns. Meet the Mental Health Service Staff![]() Nancy Harris, LCSW-C; staff psychotherapist Nancy Harris received her MSW (Masters of Social Work) degree from Boston College 1979. She has worked at the Mental Health Service at the University of Maryland Health Center since 1989. Ms. Harris was raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She attended college at University of Chicago and graduated 1972. Ms. Harris is interested in helping students recover from sexual assault and other traumas; also in treatment of anxiety disorders. Her hobbies include reading, photography, making bead jewelry, travel, knitting, cats, and ballroom dancing. She is married and has one daughter. Email address: harris@health.umd.edu![]() Robert A. Herman, M.D.; staff psychiatrist Dr. Herman received his Bachelors degree from Purchase College in 1979 and his M.D. degree from SUNY Buffalo in 1983. He completed his residency in Psychiatry at New York University Medical Center in 1987, and his psychoanalytic training at Columbia University in 1992. He has taught at New York University, Columbia University, Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He has been a staff psychiatrist at the Health Center since 2001. He is Board-certified in General Psychiatry, and is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He has an interest in developmental issues of young adulthood, cross-cultural psychiatry, addiction, depression, and bipolar disorder. He runs a support group at the Health Center for students with depression and bipolar disorders. He is a member of the Continuing Medical Education Committee for the Health Center. He is a lifelong fan of the New York Mets. He and his wife Marilou are parents to three teenage daughters. Email: herman@health.umd.edu![]() Kit Johnson; Program Manager Ms Johnson graduated from high school in 1983. Ms. Johnson served in the Armed Forces from 1983 until 1992. She began working for University of Maryland in November of 1992. Ms. Johnson was born and raised in the Washington, DC area. She is the married mother of three, two boys and a girl. Kit describes herself as "very much a people person." In her free time, she enjoys baking, shopping, karaoke, and spending time with friends and family.![]() Marta J. Hopkinson, M.D.; Director Dr. Hopkinson was raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and received her bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1983. She received her M.D. from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1987, and completed her residency training in Psychiatry at Louisiana State University in New Orleans in 1991. Dr. Hopkinson is board certified in psychiatry, and was named one of “America’s Top Psychiatrists” in 2007 by the Consumer’s Research Council of America. She is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Areas of special interest include attention deficit disorder, co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, and LGBT issues. Email: Hopkinson@health.umd.edu![]() Jennifer Leib, LCSW-C; staff psychotherapist Jennifer is a clinical Social Worker in the Mental Health Service of the University Health Center. She provides individual and group psychotherapy for undergraduate and graduate students. Jennifer co-leads the Graduate & Returning Students Psychotherapy Group and the Sexual Assault Recovery Group. Jennifer holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Miami University (in Ohio!) and a Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland. After spending a few years working in the business world, Jennifer realized that what she loves most is working directly with people to help them overcome challenges. Her past experience includes work at a rape crisis center and a residential treatment facility for adolescents. Some of Jennifer's clinical interests include anxiety, sexual assault recovery, self-injury, adjustment to college and anticipation of graduation. Jennifer is also interested in building relationships with community mental health providers to increase the network of support for students. When she’s not working, Jennifer enjoys practicing yoga, baking new recipes, planning parties and attempting to manage her garden. Jennifer can be reached via email at jleib@health.umd.edu.![]() Carrie Martin, LCSW-C; Suicide Prevention Grant Coordinator Carrie Martin earned her undergraduate degree in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1993. Upon graduation, she served as a VISTA volunteer in California where she implemented a mentoring program for at-risk youth. After her year of service, she returned to her home state of Maryland and worked in the legislative and legal fields before pursuing a graduate degree in social work. Carrie earned her MSW degree from Smith College School for Social Work in 2001. Carrie’s primary role at the Mental Health Service is to implement and coordinate the Suicide Awareness Health Education and Training (SAHET) program. Through this program, Carrie provides trainings and educational seminars to faculty, staff, students, and parents on suicide prevention, risk assessment, and crisis response. Additionally, Carrie coordinates the SAHET peer education program and provides psychotherapy to students. Carrie can be reached at cmartin@health.umd.edu.![]() Julie Parsons, LCSW-C; staff psychotherapist Julie was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She earned her Bachelors degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois with a major in music. After graduation, Julie lived in Vienna, Austria with her husband and pursued her career as a singer songwriter. Julie returned to the United States after 7 years in Europe and continued her career as a performing artist in the Washington, DC area while raising her 2 children. Ms. Parsons earned her Masters of Social Work degree (MSW) from the University of Maryland at Baltimore in 1993. She has worked in the Mental Health Service since 1998. Julie is particularly interested in issues relating to identity, relationships, loneliness, perfectionism, eating disorders and body image. You can reach Julie at parsons@health.umd.edu.![]() Kenneth L. Rothbaum, MD; staff psychiatrist Dr. Rothbaum is licensed in Maryland and Washington, DC. He has private practices in both States. Dr. Rothbaum has worked at the University of Maryland since 2004. He did his psychiatry residency at UMD in Baltimore. Dr. Rothbaum is on the faculty at Georgetown University where he teaches psychotherapy. He grew up in Brooklyn, NY, and is currently living in Washington, DC. Dr. Rothbaum is proud of his 2 grown daughters – one of whom attends graduate school in PA and the other who is in California and works as a design engineer. Email address: Rothbaum@health.umd.edu![]() Jennifer Sherman, LCSW-C; Psychotherapist Jennifer Sherman graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University in 1986. She initially worked in retail as a buyer, before deciding to return to school and follow her true calling. She earned her Masters Degree in Social Work in 1995 from the Catholic University of America. Jennifer’s clinical interests are: anxiety, depression, women’s issues, LGBTQ and identity concerns, relationship issues, life transitions and parenting concerns. She co-leads the Graduate and Returning Student Psychotherapy group. In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys reading, cooking, walking, camping and all things about Maine. In addition to working part-time at the Mental Health Service, Jennifer maintains a private practice in Washington, D.C. where she resides with her husband and two children. Jennifer can be reached at: sherman@health.umd.edu![]() Haniya Silberman, LGSW; staff psychotherapist Ms. Silberman is a social worker in the Mental Health and Substance Abuse services of the University Health Center. Having planned to be a therapist since the age of 5, Haniya got her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from UMD and her Masters degree in Social Work from the Catholic University of America. She provides individual and group psychotherapy for undergraduate and graduate students and helps with various Health Center programs. Haniya runs a support group for students with AD/HD and co-facilitates the SEEDS meetings (Students Educating about Eating Disorders). She has many professional interests, but is currently spending most of her time working with students with AD/HD, Substance Abuse issues, or relationship problems. In her spare time, Haniya enjoys cooking, watching documentary films, playing golf, and listening to hip hop music. You can reach Haniya at silberman@health.umd.edu![]() Michael Torres, M.D.; Psychiatrist Dr. Torres obtained his undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Rochester in 1984 and his medical degree in 1990 from Hahnemann University, which is now Drexel University College of Medicine. In 1994 he completed specialty training in Psychiatry at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He is board certified in Psychiatry and a member of the American Psychiatric Association.Prior to joining the Health Center in the Fall of 2006, Dr. Torres gained experience working with adolescents and adults in a variety of community mental health settings in the Baltimore/Washington area. While Dr. Torres is well versed in treating a broad range of behavioral disorders, he particularly enjoys working with individuals with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. He is widely recognized for his expertise in addressing cultural diversity and spirituality in the context of mental health services. At the Mental Health Service, Dr. Torres provides group therapy for men of color. When away from work, Dr. Torres enjoys cycling, tennis, archery, photography, going to the movies, listening to jazz, and exotic pets including his kinkajou named Mocha. ![]() Stacy Woods, M.D.; staff psychiatrist Dr. Woods graduated from the University of Maryland College Park in 1991 with a B.S. in psychology. She completed her medical degree at the University of Maryland Medical School at Baltimore in 1996. Dr. Woods completed her residency in psychiatry in 2000. Her interests include mood disorders, anxiety and psychotic disorders. Dr. Woods is married with 1 daughter.
The Mental Health Service is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We are located on the second floor of the University Health Center. Please call 301.314.8106 for an appointment. For substance abuse program information call (301) 314-8106. For eating disorders program information call 301.314.8142. There is a $10 fee for all mental health sessions. If this poses a hardship for you, please discuss this with the clinician.
