Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)April 1 - April 30, 2008 (Download and Print the SAAM calendar!) Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes Discussion with Byron Hurt
The Men’s Anti-Violence Project and Maryland Athletics are pleased to host film director Byron Hurt on April 29th starting at 7 p.m. in the Orem Alumni Hall in the Riggs Alumni Center. A showing of Byron’s “Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes” will be shown and a discussion of the film with Byron will immediately follow. The film is a “loving critique from a life-long fan that challenges hip-hop’s representations of hyper-masculinity through images of sexism, gender, race, homophobia, violence, and consumerism in hip-hop culture and in the larger American society." VIA training is done throughout the semester for any student interested in becoming trained. The Violence Intervention Assistant training program (VIA) was created by the Office of the Victim Advocate (OVA) to bridge the gap between the trained advocates from OVA and the broader campus community. By offering a more basic training to a larger and more widespread population, the OVA is able to provide more victims with the resources that they offer. To learn more, click here. |
