Meet the SHAC Members

Aparna Ramaseshan

Aparna Ramaseshan

Hi. My name is Aparna Ramaseshan and I am the President of SHAC this year. I am in my Senior year majoring in Physiology & Neurobiology. After college I plan on pursuing a medical education. This is my third year in SHAC. My goal is to make the Health Center accessible to every student at the University. I want to bring awareness among students to all the different facilities provided by the Health Center so that the student body can take maximum advantage of the Health Center. Also, it is important for students to voice their suggestions and concerns about the Health Center and a student committee like SHAC allows students to do so. As President of SHAC, I will try my best to address all the concerns students have about the Health Center.

Nizar Dowla

Nizar Dowla

Hi, my name is Nizar Dowla and I am a Junior Chemistry and Spanish Double Major. I am currently an intern at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and this past summer I conducted research into treatment of neurological disorders at the Uniformed Services University Department of Pharmacology. This is my second year on the Student Health Advisory Committee, and as Treasurer, I would want to continue to help raise student awareness of the services that are offered at the University Health Center, help students to make healthy decisions while they are at school, as well as represent the student body in discussions with the administration of the UHC through my participation on the Quality Assurance Committee. I hope that my experience with SHAC will prepare me for a career in medicine, particularly in clinical research.

Mona Beier

Hi, I'm Mona Beier.I am Secretary of SHAC this year. I am a senior Neurobiology & Physiology major. This is my second year in SHAC and I am very excited to be involved with a group that makes such an impact on campus. The Health Center is an integral aspect for every student and it is important that students have a voice in the kind of health care they are receiving, especially because many students don't have access to off-campus treatment. I am really looking forward to the upcoming coming year and hope to make many improvements!

Derek Epp

Derek Epp

Hi, My name is Derek Epp. I am a Senior Political Science Major and am very interested in the health aspect of college life. I joined the Student Health Advisory Committee when I was a sophomore in hope to learn more about the Health Center and spread the word or the programs that SHAC sponsors. Last year, I was also an employee of the Health Center, working in the Medical Records department. I am also very interested in biological and zoological studies; I worked at the National Zoo this summer helping with Panda care.

Angie Pescosolido

Angie Pescosolido

My name is Angie Pescosolido and I am a senior Public and Community Health major from New Hampshire. This is my fsecond year as a member of SHAC, and I hope to make the student body more aware of the excellent programs and resources available through the University Health Center. In addition to being a member of SHAC, I am a member of Delta Delta Delta, one of the sororities on campus, and I would love to work as a liaison between the Greek community and the University Health Center. After I earn my degree I hope to either pursue a career with a pharmaceutical company or go on to complete a nursing degree.

Ashley Soleimani

Ashley Soleimani

Hello there, my name is Ashley Soleimani and I am currently a junior at UMD majoring in Biology. This is my second year with SHAC and I am extremely excited to represent the student body at such an essential institution. With a high volume of patients, the staff at the University Health Center constantly strive to efficiently and effectively treat UMD students and employees. As part of this committee I hope to identify particular areas in which the Health Center could use some improvement. Also, this year I look forward to planning fun events for students which can simultaneously promote a healthy campus.

Sang Kim

Sang Kim

Hi, I'm Sang Kim and I am a member of the Student Health Advisory Committee at the University Health Center. I'm majoring in Physiology/Neurobiology and minoring in Asian American Studies and I'm currently a senior living at Allegany. SHAC's role is to provide a student voice to the health center and also to promote health throughout the student body; vital jobs that I believe are integral to the campus community. As programming chair, I'd love to hear your ideas on programs targeted toward improving health and awareness throughout the campus.

Yan Li

Hi. My name is Yan Li and I am a Junior majoring in Biochemistry and Economics. This is my second year in SHAC. I joined SHAC because it seemed like a really good way to get the students voices heard at the University Health Center. Providing feedback about the UHC and ways to improve it ensures that the students are happy with the services provided. It is important for the University community to know all the different services the UHC provides and ways to take advantage of those. I also volunteer at the University of Maryland Medical Center and hope to attend medical school in the future.

Novlette Akinseye

Hi. My name is Novlette Akinseye and I am a junior majoring in Micorbiology. After graduation I hope to attend medical school and pursue both a medical degree and an MBA. I joined SHAC to make a difference in the communication lines between the Health Center and our large student body at Maryland. I have a great interest in the health and wellbeing of the individuals at our school, and sought a way to position myself so that I can make a difference. Being a student here for 3 years I have noticed that many students are unaware of the services at the Health Center and the different events that SHAC carries out. This is my first year on the committee and I am excited to be a part of making a difference here at our school.

Katrina Dunn

My name is Katrina and I am studying dietetics at the University of Maryland. I joined SHAC because I believe the University Health Center is one of the greatest resources here on this campus. I want to encourage students to explore all the Health Center has to offer, while educating and encouraging my peers to make good choices. I joined SHAC to do my part to bring more services to the Health Center and make sure we get to keep and/or improve the great services we already have. I hope to gain a better understanding of issues facing young adults as well as the inter-workings of a health center environment.

Melissa Mazlin

Hey! My name is Melissa Mazlin. I am currently a sophomore majoring in Psychology; with a Pre-Medicine focus. After I graduate the University of Maryland, College Park, I aspire to go to medical school and eventually earn an M.D. degree. This past summer I trained for and earned certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. I hope EMT training can be a benefit in what I have to offer SHAC. This is my first year in SHAC and I am looking forward to working along with other SHAC members on many projects. I hope to be able to offer information which can benefit the general student body in becoming more aware of certain health issues which may pertain to them.

Laura Messing

Hi, I am Laura Messing and I am majoring in Social Anthropolgy with a minor in Public and Community Health. I have been involved in many groups within the Health Center such as SHARE and the Healthy Workers Program, and wish to stay involved for the rest of my college career. I have always been interested in health from a cultural perspective and hope to get an MPH upon graduation. My last undergraduate semester will be spent studying indigenous health care in Brazil; utilizing hands on techniques to asses health behavior, procedures and various treatment techniques. I am very committed to making sure health care is available to everyone, and that is one of the main reasons that I joined SHAC.

Serena Mitchual

Hello! My name is Serena Mitchual, a current Junior General Biology major with Pre-Dental focus here at the University of Maryland. Post graduation I hope to attend Dental School, and eventually run my own practice as an Orthodontist, with an additional specialty in Pediatric Dentistry. This is my very first year working with SHAC, and I cannot express how excited I am for the upcoming school year, and all that SHAC has in store. I look forward to planning various programs that inform students of various health issues, as well as all the different aspects of the Heatlh Center here on campus. I am extremely happy to be a part of an organization that is very much here to serve the students, and improve upon the services the Health Center provides.

Leanne Radecki
