Quality Assurance

The Quality Assurance Committee is the core function of the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC). The committee is responsible for monitoring the praises, suggestions, and complaints submitted to the health center. Patients can submit comments either by mailing or e-mailing them to SHAC, or most commonly, by dropping them off the comment cards in the suggestion box next to reception in the main lobby. Members of the QA committee review comments weekly.

Rate Our Performance Once comments are received, committee members review them in order to determine what action needs to be taken to address the comment. For example, compliments are forwarded to relevant departments or staff members. Problems and suggestions are reviewed by the health center director, Dr. Bridwell, along with other relevant staff. Staff members and SHAC then work together to create and implement solutions when possible. If contact information is provided, students who submit comments may be contacted to follow-up in greater detail of thank them for their input. Confidentiality is maintained.

Each month, SHAC presents a QA report at the administrative QA meeting, where concerns are brought up with the departmental heads of the health center. At least one member of SHAC is present at this meeting to present the report. This person then relays the relevant information to the members of SHAC. In addition, several SHAC members work or volunteer in the health center and are able to add a student perspective to quality assurance. Through the QA committee, SHAC works to ensure a student voice in health center services.

Making a Difference

Many students have voiced their concern over the dreary look, feel, and atmosphere of the health center. In response, SHAC has implemented several solutions. First, SHAC held an art contest, which was advertised in the art school. Artwork submitted in the contest was used to decorate the health center's empty halls. You may see this artwork in the halls and lobby of the main floor. Second, SHAC began a bulletin board, which highlights different staff members. This adds life to the main lobby and to the staff. Finally, SHAC started Patient Appreciation Day, the first Monday of every month. On this day, SHAC gives students who come to the health center a token of appreciation for using health center services. SHAC hopes that the three changes described above help to create a more positive environment at the University Health Center.
