Who SHAC Is

The Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) acts as a student voice to the University Health Center administration. SHAC members sit on a variety of UHC committees as the student representative. SHAC members are available to listen to your comments, suggestions, complaints, or compliments about the UHC. SHAC also responds to the comments submitted by students to the Suggestion Box located in the lobby of the first floor of the UHC. SHAC works closely with the Director of the UHC to help resolve any complaints. Aside from their liaison duties, SHAC gets involved in some outreach programming. back to top

SHAC's Mission

The Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) acts as a student liaison to the University Health Center (UHC) at the University of Maryland. Comprised of 10-15 students from various majors, SHAC acts to ensure quality health care services by voicing student views to the UHC staff and administration. In addition, SHAC members serve as student representatives on UHC committees and plan health related events for the campus community. SHAC members welcome suggestions, comments, and questions about the UHC. There is a suggestion box conveniently located in the lobby of the first floor of the UHC. If there are any concerns in regards to treatment received from the Health Center, SHAC can be relied upon to address the issue. SHAC works closely with the director of UHC to help resolve any complaints. back to top

Membership in SHAC

SHAC accepts applications in the spring semester for membership during the next school year. Applications can be picked up at the health center or filled out on-line. All applicants go through an informal interview process with current SHAC members to become better acquainted with the organization. Final decisions will be made by the end of April. We strongly encourage any major to apply, especially those outside of life sciences. SHAC does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, disability or ethnicity.

As a member of SHAC, one must attend at least 75% of the bi-weekly meetings and participate in SHAC's events and programs.
