21% report violence by a current partner. SARPP Domestic Violence Awareness Month October 2009 Red Flag Campaign Launch: The unveiling of the Red Flag Campaign for the University of Maryland College Park community in a short panel presentation. Refreshments provided. Wednesday, September 30th, 11:30am @ McKeldin Library Front Steps (rain location: Baltimore Room, Stamp Student Union, 0240). www.theredflagcampaign.org Clothesline Project: A public art project raising awareness about the incidence of sexual and relationship violence on our campus. Each shirt is a piece of art created by or in honor of a survivor of violence in the UMD community. T-shirt making supplies are available at the event. October 7th, 9am-4pm on Hornbake Plaza (Rain date: October 14th 9am-4pm on Hornbake Plaza). Violence Intervention Assistant (VIA) Training: This training prepares you to provide basic crisis intervention, help access the appropriate resources, and understand the issues of sexual assault in a basic way so that you can intervene in a helpful, not hurtful, way. The goal is so to become a "safe place” for friends, family or coworkers to talk to, and to explore resource options. October 10th and 11th, 12-6pm both days, University Health Center. Survivor Garden Planting and Re-Dedication Ceremony: The flower garden in front of the University Health Center is a memorial for all survivors of violence in our community. Each fall we plant bulbs during Domestic Violence Awareness Month and re-dedicate the garden. In April, during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the flowers bloom, signifying the beauty and strength of survivors of violence. Come help us plant the 500 bulbs donated by Building and Landscape Services! Tuesday, October 20st 5pm in front of the University Health Center When Does Caring Become Controlling? The Red Flags of Dating Violence: Bring your lunch, and we’ll provide the cupcakes for this interactive presentation! 32% of college students report dating violence by a previous partner, 21% report violence by a current partner; this presentation will help you learn to identify DV and appropriately intervene. Wednesday, October 28th @ Noon in the University Health Center, Helsia room (ground floor). HopeLine Cell Phone Drive: Bring your used cell phones and/or phone accessories to be recycled; all proceeds help to support domestic violence programs. This is the program that sponsors the SARPP Advocate Crisis Cell! During October you can bring your items to the donation boxes in the University Health Center lobby or the SARPP Advocate Office, room 2118D…or send them through campus mail, attention Allison Bennett, UHC Bldg 140, Rm 2118D.
