What can you do to improve environmental health?

  1. Feed the Turtle!

Feed the Turtle! Feed the Recycle Turtle located at the University Health Center Main Entrance with recyclables.

  2. Our Recycling Bulletin Board

Read our recycling education board located in the University Health Center Main Lobby. It has great information on how you can do your part in recycling.

  3. Drop off your used batteries in the battery recycle box near the Recycling Education board (see above).
  4. Dispose of recyclable cans, paper and plastic at our recycle containers located throughout the University Health Center.

How is the University Health Center contributing to improving environmental health?

  1. Conservation
    • Our HVAC system uses outside air (up to 50 degrees) instead of using chilled water to heat and cool the building.
    • The Health Center participates in the University of Maryland's Department of Environmental Safety's Energy Check program.
    • Shut down computers. Turn off lights. Close Windows.
  2. Recycling
    • Cardboard
    • Printer Cartridges
    • Mixed Paper
    • Plastic Bottles
    • Glass
    • Aluminum Cans
    • And More!
  3. Waste Reduction
    • Reduce Printing by making resource materials available on-line at www.health.umd.edu/resources
    • Forms and educational materials are printed on 30% post-consumer waste paper.
  4. Salvage and Re-Use
    • Give used furniture and computer equipment to Terp Trader for re-sale and re-use of items by others.
    • We use an internal computer and furniture "bump-down" system.
  5. We make recycling fun!

The staff at the University Health Center takes recycling seriously.

Monthly recycling contests are held to encourage innovative ways to recycle and to make sure everyone complies with the University of Maryland Division of Student Affairs Recycling Regulations. Contest winners are posted on the Recycling Education board located in the lobby.

Winning units have increased the amount of recycling they do, the types of recycling they do, holding each other accountable for doing their part, and creating individual projects using recycled materials.
