How to Help a Friend

  • Be well informed about alcohol and other drugs issues (this flyer is a good start!)
  • Offer to seek help with him/her
  • Tell your friend you care about them
  • Communicate clearly and consistently
  • Be non-judgmental
  • Discuss your friend's alcohol-related behaviors when he/she is sober
  • Tell your friend when you are calm, not angry
  • Tell your friend how his/her behavior is affecting you
  • Set limits to the behavior you will tolerate from your friend
  • Ask your friend: "How can I help you get help?"

Campus Chaplains

If you are concerned about a friend, do approach him/her. Chances are, this isn't the first time someone will have discussed the problem with him/her. Unfortunately, it may not be the last time either. Be aware that your friend may not be ready to address the problem and may continue to use.
