ProgramsAlcohol and Other Drug Education ProgramPeer educators facilitate interactive workshops designed to increase awareness and knowledge about alcohol and other drug issues specifically impacting college students. Topics include physical effects of alcohol, marijuana, Ecstasy, Oxycontin, GHB, and other drug use, tips for responsible drinking, sex under the influence, warning signs of problematic drinking, and alternative activities. Contact: Kendra Smoak (smoak@health.umd.edu) Center for Health & WellbeingThe Center for Health & Wellbeing, located in the Campus Recreation Center, is a satellite office of the University Health Center. The Center offers health promotion programs on a variety of topics including nutrition, stress management, massage, acupuncture, mental health, and more. These programs are offered as brown bag lunch programs and evening programs. A health educator is available to provide health information and referrals for health services. Diet analysis is also offered. Contact: Tracy Zeeger (CHWB@health.umd.edu) Eating Disorders EducationThe Health Center's Eating Disorders Education Program covers eating and body image disorders. This peer education program is led by students recovering from eating disorders who share their personal stories. For more information, call the number below.
Contact: Julie Parsons (parsons@health.umd.edu) Faculty/Staff AssistanceThe Faculty/Staff Assistance Program provides assessments, short-term counseling and referral services for faculty and staff members who have interpersonal, emotional, relationship, family, job, or alcohol/drug related problems. The program counselors are also available to consult with supervisors and departments chairs regarding employee problems.

(bellsey@health.umd.edu) Healthy WorkersThe Healthy Workers Program is a comprehensive worksite health program that provides basic primary and dental care and health education to medically underserved workers on campus. The target population of uninsured temporary and contract workers comes mostly from the Dining Services Department. Many of the workers have limited English proficiency; the majority of them speak Spanish. Workers receive services in the Health Center and worksite screenings.

This is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience while earning academic credit through some of the programs. Most peer programs require a commitment of one academic year.

Sexual Health ProgramIndividual and group educational sessions and presentations are available on reproductive health, contraception, sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, and safer sex practices.
Contact: Alli Matson (amatson@health.umd.edu) Smoking CessationGroup classes individual counseling, and self-help materials are available for smokers who wish to quit. Smokers can learn more about their smoking behavior, the best strategies for quitting, and measures to avoid relapse.

Contact: Tracy Zeeger (chwb@health.umd.edu) Student Health Advisory ComitteeThe Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) acts as a student voice to the University Health Center administration. SHAC members sit on a variety of UHC committees as the student representative. SHAC members are available to listen to your comments, suggestions, complaints, or compliments about the Health Center. SHAC also responds to the comments submitted by students to the Suggestion Box located in the lobby on the first floor. SHAC works closely with the Director of the Health Center to help resolve any complaints. Aside from their liaison duties, SHAC gets involved in some outreach programming.
