Suicide Prevention Workshops
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students in the United States. The University of Maryland is committed to providing information and training to prevent suicide. We offer workshops in person and online. To schedule a Suicide Prevention Workshop, call (301) 314-8106 and ask to speak with the Suicide Prevention coordinator.
In-person Gatekeeper Training
A Gatekeeper is anyone in a position who could be approached in a suicidal crisis but who typically is not trained to intervene in such situations. Gatekeeper trainings are for those who want to feel more comfortable, confident and competent in helping to prevent the risk of suicide.
This training teaches people how to:
*recognize individuals who are at potential suicide risk
*refer others to professional counseling
Gatekeepers are given information that is easy to understand, along with methods to encourage a person to get help and suicide prevention resources. Presentations are typically 1 hour and can be scheduled for residence halls, student groups and academic classes. To schedule a Gatekeeper Training, call (301) 314-8106 and ask to speak with the Suicide Prevention coordinator.
