Insurance & Fees

Health Insurance

Every currently registered student is eligible to use the University Health Center (UHC).

The University of Maryland requires comprehensive health insurance coverage for all undergraduate students admitted in or after Fall 2009 and are registered for 6 or more credits.

The top three things you need to know about insurance at UHC:

1) Call your insurance provider before visiting the Health Center to make sure they will cover our services. Generally, the customer service phone number for your insurance is listed on your insurance card.  Make sure you know your policy number and policyholder's name when you call.  Be sure to ask if your visit will be covered and also if you will be responsible for any payment.

2) Always bring your insurance card and photo ID to every visit.

3) Call ahead to schedule an appointment at (301) 314-8184 or make an appointment online.
If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, dial 911.

Students should check with their family’s insurance company to discuss their eligibility of benefits and reimbursement procedures for UHC fees.  United Healthcare Health Insurance Company currently provides a health insurance policy designed for University of Maryland, College Park students; information is mailed to all new students before the start of the semester. Most HMOs (Health Maintenance Organizations) do not cover services outside their areas, so students in outlying counties in Maryland or in other states or nations may want to consider enrolling in the student health insurance plan.

Mandatory Health Insurance
The University of Maryland requires comprehensive health insurance coverage for all undergraduate student registered for 6 or more credits. These students are required to show proof of health insurance coverage by completing an online waiver card.  Waivers can only be completed online at https://studentcenter.uhcsr.com.The waiver site will open mid-May 2012 for the 2012-2013 academic year. Instructions on completing the on-line waiver will be sent to your e-mail.

Mandatory Health Insurance FAQ

Students must either waive (show proof of insurance) or enroll in the University sponsored student health insurance plan.

Students are required to complete a waiver each academic year.

Students registered for Spring 2012, who do not show proof of health insurance, will be automatically enrolled and the premium ($641) will be billed to their student accounts.

There may be a $100 penalty fee for registered students submitting proof of insurance after the deadline.
